Uber-Rapido Gets A Jolt In Delhi, Ban on Bike-Taxi Continues: Supreme Court

The ban on bike-taxis will continue in the national capital. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the order of the Delhi High Court. In fact, the High Court had stayed the notice issued by the government in this regard. The Delhi government challenged this decision in the apex court.

The government wants app-based services like Rapido and Uber to bar two-wheelers with non-commercial registration from being used before a comprehensive policy is formulated by it.

On May 26, the Delhi High Court issued notice to the Delhi government on Rapido’s plea challenging one of its laws. Two-wheelers were excluded from being registered as transport vehicles under this law. The High Court had asked the government to make a final policy in this matter. It was also said that till then no coercive action will be taken against the bike-taxi aggregator.

Ropen Transportation Services Pvt Ltd, which runs Rapido, in its petition filed in the High Court said that the Delhi government’s order directs non-transport two-wheelers to immediately stop carrying passengers for hire and commercial purposes. It is passed without any reason or rationale.

Earlier this year, the Delhi government issued a public notice warning bike-taxis against operating the service in Delhi. Also said that those violating it may have to pay a fine of up to one lakh rupees.
